Once Upon a Time, Things Got a Little Wicked | A Fantasy Boudoir Creative

I’ve always thought the villains in fairy tales had the better wardrobes, the more interesting personalities, and significantly more fun with their lives. And when you start looking at those childhood stories through the eyes of a boudoir photographer, there’s a LOT of room to get creative.

This particular creative session took Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and the Evil Queen out of their storybooks and gave them a completely different interpretation through my eyes. I played with everything that makes those stories recognizable, but put my own spin on the details. Poison apples, the red and black wardrobe, flowers, wings, candlelight, and smoke helped create three different looks that felt like they belonged in the same twisted fairy-tale universe in the woods.

I especially loved getting to play with the contrast between the characters. Sleeping Beauty had this gorgeous, dreamy atmosphere surrounded by flowers and clouds of smoke, while the darker styling brought an entirely different personality to the Snow White and Evil Queen portions of the shoot. There was something so fun about taking these familiar characters and deciding which parts of their stories we wanted to keep, exaggerate, or completely throw out.

And looking back at these images seven years later, I’m reminded of how much I genuinely enjoy creating something just because the idea sounds fun as hell. Creative photography gives me the opportunity to experiment with concepts that don’t necessarily have a rulebook. Sometimes that means dreaming up an elaborate set, pulling inspiration from a movie, or putting together a wardrobe that would look completely ridiculous anywhere except in front of my camera.

This was one of those projects where we got to have fun with the whole process, and I’m still ridiculously fond of the results.
